EMA (ericmitchell)

Eric Mitchell, also known as EMA, is a UK born multidisciplinary visual artist and creative practitioner. Born in Wolverhampton in the early ’70s, he later relocated to Perth Western Australia in the late ’80s.
Mitchell’s artistic journey has been shaped by a turbulent childhood, which significantly influenced both his identity and creative practice.

His work spans various mediums, including painting, digital art, and video. Mitchell delves into thought-provoking themes such as technology, spirituality, identity, counterculture, rebellion, displacement, and mental health—all infused with a playful sense of humour. As an outsider, he keenly observes contemporary culture, leveraging technology to broaden his perspective.

Mitchell’s art incorporates figurative abstraction, drawing inspiration from modern movements like cubism, dada, expressionism, and zombie formalism. His works are characterized by bold colour palettes and pentimento layering techniques, and serendipitous accidents that shape the final piece. Notably, he employs pareidolia, creating odd characters within his paintings—inviting viewers to interpret their narratives.

Beyond this, Mitchell actively explores queer abstraction in the realm of digital media, pushing boundaries and challenging norms. His neurodivergence further fuels his creativity, allowing him to embrace a unique perspective. The creative process for Mitchell is dynamic and spontaneous, often altering the course of a work’s creation. Rather than aiming for a mere representation of the world, he acts as a conduit, allowing his pieces to evolve freely. The result? Vibrant, unconventional works that celebrate figurative abstraction, bold colours, patterns, and visual nods to diverse artists and expressions.
