Displaced
Displaced
This work explores the experience of being displaced, by assessing the psychological landscapes of our built environment, the forces of nature and the physical world. We interact with the world around us by taking in subliminal messages about who we should be and how we ‘should’ interact with the world. Yet, if we don’t fit this mold then we become further isolated and distanced from social connection, the very thing that has maintained our survival as humans.

Cheryl Millard is a Perth-based artist whose evocative work delves into the surreal and the subconscious, an exploration of the psyche through the lens of surrealism and the unorthodox beauty of lowbrow art. Her creations are a response to the omnipresent dialogue between our inner lives and the external built environment. Cheryl’s pieces often reflect on the subliminal messages encoded in our surroundings, examining how architecture and space influence our self-perception and societal roles.
Her work is an inquiry into the depths of the mind, encouraging a closer inspection of the often-overlooked intersection between the psychological landscape and the physical world. Through her art, Cheryl challenges viewers to confront the subtext of their environments and to reimagine their place within it. Each piece is an invitation to uncover hidden truths and to offer a transformative perspective on how we experience and interact with the spaces we inhabit.
